What distressed student debt actually does to people
Most conversations about student loans are about the big federal number. The harder story is smaller and much lonelier: private student loans that went into default, where fees compound, collection costs pile on, and interest can climb past 20 percent.
At that point the loan stops being a debt you are paying down and becomes a thing you are simply carrying. Refinancing is closed to you, because your credit is already wrecked by the default. It is a trap with the door welded shut.
The lender for people lenders gave up on
Yrefy works with the loans nobody else will touch: distressed, delinquent, and defaulted private student debt. They negotiate directly with whoever holds the loan, settle it at a discount, and then issue the borrower a new loan with a fixed rate and terms a human being can actually live with.
